WESTERN INDEPENDENCE PARTY OF SASKATCHEWAN
Party Leader John Nesdoly responds to the 2007 Provincial budget

Great Bend, Saskatchewan - March 24, 2007 -

On March 22, 2007 Provincial Finance Minister Andrew Thompson unveiled his budget and it was a truly historic document. The 2007 Provincial Budget had record levels of spending and on a much worse point it was a deficit budget. A deficit of over $500 million.

Our Province's net debt has increased in this year's budget. In the opinion of the Western Independence Party of Saskatchewan this is never a good thing. It costs us $560 million dollars a year to service that debt, money which could be used for many better things.

Let us talk about that $560 million. If the people of Saskatchewan were desirous of another tax cut it could cut the PST in half to 2.5%. If the people of Saskatchewan were wanting a cut in personal income taxes that money could have literally almost been used to cut them by one-third. Five hundred and sixty million dollars would have been an enormous boost to our highways and city infrastructure. That money could also have been used to lower the costs of post-secondary tuition fees. It could have been used to begin the building of a nuclear power plant in order to replace one of our polluting coal fired power plants. The possibilities would have been endless on what could have been done.

This government obviously does not possess this kind of vision. The government in waiting (the Sask Party) is trying to buy votes with billions more. Since 2001 government spending has increased by 40%... and that is not sustainable. The rate at which they are spending money would have embarrassed Richard Pryor's character in the movie "Brewster's Millions".

It is time to end financial waste and mismanagement. It is time to elect a government that will hold spending in check and use all surplus revenues to pay down the debt. It is time for a Western Independence Party government.
